Welcome to my little corner of the web.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, blah blah blah. Erm... anyways.

This page is about my internet presence, because I felt I needed something more than a free webhost could offer me, and I'm not willing to pay for something I can achieve with my own efforts.

So here you'll find what I think I need to put on show for the electronic world to see. A few projects I've worked on in the past, a few projects I'm working on at present, my CV, just in case some potential employers pass this way. A few nice and useful things. Things to help me when I'm not here, and things to help others when I am.

I'll begin with a little about me:

My name is Edward William Torbett. I'm 21, born on the 5th August, 1983. I am currently studying computer science at the University of Warwick, UK, in my 3rd and final year of study.

As yet I haven't decided what to do when I graduate, however, I plan to work for a company back home for at least one year called Simulation Systems Limited. SSL are a small company that sub-contract work from the Highways Agency. I enjoy the work, and recently have worked on a project called HANET, that I feel has been most relevant to the field of work I wish to move into in later life.

I have been a programmer for most of my life, and certainly it has shaped to some extent or another everything that I do. One particular area in which I have recently worked (though at the company's request, myself and others have discontinued our work) is in the emulation of a server for the newly released game "World of Warcraft". During this work, I have become familiar with many of the practical aspects of large-scale server software, and have gained much experience with dealing with problems such as lag, multi-threading issues, efficiently storing and accessing the vast amounts of data involved, preventing cheating and exploits, and so forth. I feel I must take a moment to point out that at no time did I intend the work I did to be released or used by any other party for any purpose, and to the best of my knowledge the emulation software I created was not given to any other party, nor used by anyone excepting myself. Sorry about the legal disclaimer-y bit, but go here and you'll see why I put that.
